Are you asking yourself how you got here?
It’s ok if you don’t understand all the thoughts in your head, or if you cannot process all the overwhelming feelings that are coming over you. Many people who attempt suicide or have suicidal thoughts, have an underlying mental health issue that they may or may not be aware of. It could even be a very hurtful or stressful life event that slowly pushed you over the edge.
Some common thoughts and feelings you might experience:
- Shame or embarrassment
- Confusion and trying to make sense of what has happened
- Guilt or worry about the reaction of friends or family
- Anger at yourself for having relapsed after a time when you were doing better
- Feeling that you have failed your loved ones
- Feeling relieved that you have survived
Talking to someone always helps. Get all the support you need to get through this part, which is the hardest part in the recovery process.
Direct/ Urgent Support
Seeing a doctor, specifically a psychiatrist or a psychologist is an important step to help you in gaining some control over your suicidal thoughts. Even if the attempt was not life threatening, seeing a medical professional is necessary at this point.

Acknowledge what you think and feel
- Try to understand the triggers that may be contributing to your thoughts
- Tell yourself that these thoughts and feelings will soon pass even though they may feel everlasting
- Don’t belittle your feelings or problems. They mean something to you, so do not underestimate them.
- Remind yourself, that in that very moment, you need to find a safe place to go to.
